“In 1981, a spaceship landed on the Buzludzha Peak in central Bulgaria. An extravagant, grand, lavish Communist building which took 7 years, 6,000 workers, 70,000 tons of concrete, 3,000 tons of steel and 40 tons of glass to finish. It aimed to celebrate 1,300 years since Bulgaria's establishment and to show how solid and prosperous the regime was. However, now it is standing sad, lonely and completely ruined.

Highly controversial, it still captures the imagination of the public. Nowadays the building is locked. It is falling apart and therefore, dangerous. On the day we visited, a mosaic restoration project just started with an American Foundation grant. Will it ever be revived? ”
